John Daly, yes that John Daly, is attempting to remake himself. I know he’s tried to clean himself up before, but this time he’s taking it a step further. He has trimmed down by over 100 pounds. He also is looking to write a book in the future and wouldn’t even mind a movie being made about him and his life.
Let’s hope that John gets it right this time.
And Tiger, let’s just hope that he can get his life back on track as well.
As John says in an article on him in Jay Busbee’s Yahoo Sports Blog Devil Ball Golf, “I’m not too happy with what some of the players have said. Without him our tour would not survive as what it is when Tiger plays.”
John has never been one to back down from telling it like it is.

Missed talking about Tiger Woods last week at the 2009 Buick Open, but, yes, he won again by 3 strokes. In fact, that gave him his 4th win of the year.
Well, that was last week and this is this week. This time it was the Bridgestone Invitational, but the results were the same. Tiger won again giving him yet another win in the World Golf Championships while taking him one closer to Jack Nicklaus on the all-time wins list.
Tiger Woods has now won his 70th tournament 7 years faster than the Golden Bear who won his 70th at age 40 and he won it in dramatic fashion. No doubt people will debate this one for some time, but at the end of the day Tiger gets the win, the money, the ranking, and goes into next weeks PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club with a full head of steam.
Look out field.

Just caught a bit of a show called, “Golf in America“, on The Golf Channel. It had an interesting story of something called the National Hickory Championship.
The NHC is a tournament played with old-time clubs, balls, and everything else.
Come to find out there is quite a following of pure golf enthusiasts with associations, websites, courses, and clubmakers dedicated to it.
One of the associations is the Hickory Golf Association. The HGA sponsor tournaments throughout the US each year and have quite a following of golfers.
This is just neat.

This is just too sick to be real.
No way this happened, especially on the PGA Tour right? Wrong. It happened.
During the RBC Canadian Open over the weekend someone hit a ball that hit the green, bounced off his playing partners ball and went in the hole. And it wasn’t Vijay Singh or Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson it was Leif Olson.
It was an incredible shot in that you don’t see something like that often, but luck was more involved than skill. Still it’s worth applauding.
Congratulations Leif.

Well, I was partially right. Mathew Goggin and Ross Fisher were not able to stand up to the pressure, but I neglected to account for other veterans of the PGA Tour being close by after the 3rd round of The Open Championship at Turnberry.
That led to Stewart Cink working his way into a tie with Tom Watson through 18 holes and beating him in a playoff.
This was supposed to be about Watson, but it ended up being about Cink. The 5′-9″ Watson against the 6′-4″ Cink. The just days shy of 60 Watson and the just turned 36 Cink.
Oh well, if the stars had aligned it would have been another 6′ plus 30 something named Eldrick that would have been battling Tom.
We can always dream, can’t we.

Tom Watson is still hanging on. He has me fooled. Maybe you, too.
Nearing 60, check. Not able to put it 300+ down the fairway, check. All of this is true, but is it necessary at Turnberry for The Open Championship? Obviously not.
What is necessary is mastery of your own game. Placement is king. A hot putter doesn’t hurt. Experience becomes a good friend.
Check. Check. Check. Check. Welcome to history, Tom.
I know you may be thinking that I’m getting ahead of myself, but why not jump onto the bandwagon now. I mean it’s not like he’s playing men named Tiger, Vijay, Phil, or Jack tomorrow.
Mathew Goggin and Ross Fisher are well respected in some circles I’m sure, but this is not some circles. This is the top of the food pyramid and Tom Watson doesn’t fall off when he’s on top on the final day of a tournament. I’m hoping he doesn’t choose tomorrow to begin.
We’ll all be watching to see.

Tiger Woods is out. Tom Watson is leading.
Maybe 10 years ago, but not now, right? I mean Tiger is the best there is and Tom Watson is, well, old. The guy is like almost 60 and while that doesn’t seem so old anymore it is in golf years or is it?
Oh well, Tiger is done with The Open Championship for 2009, but I have a feeling that Tom Watson may not be far behind. Sure he’s leading after the second day, but many have only to fail by the time the last ball falls into the hole on the final day.
Understand, I would love for Tom to do it. I just don’t see it happening.
Good luck anyway, Tom.

Tiger Woods is getting ready to take another step forward on the list of all-time great golfers and Turnberry is the site.
The question is whether he can get it done yet again. The answer will begin to take shape tomorrow. Turnberry hosts The Open Championship and opening rounds begin tomorrow.
Stay tuned.

Wisconsin native Steve Stricker wins the John Deere Classic. Steve is having a good year. This win places him second behind Tiger Woods in the FedEx Cup standings.
Not bad company to be in. And this is leading into the British Open or The Open Championship.
The question is, “Can Steve use this as momentum?” We’ll find out the answer to that soon enough.
Stay tuned.

In an article posted on Yahoo! Sports, Doug Ferguson discusses the fact that only 4 of the top 12 golfers in the world attended the 2009 AT&T National hosted by Tiger Woods.
This was still a great tournament without the big guys, but could it have been better? Would Tiger have won?
Makes one think, doesn’t it.
